Isolation Photo Project, Day 82: Lawrence-Hopewell Trail

Friday afternoon Bhavna and I returned to Mount Rose to walk, not hike, the Lawrence Hopewell Trail.

Friday afternoon Bhavna and I returned to Mount Rose to walk, not hike, the section of the Lawrence Hopewell that runs parallel to Pennington-Rocky Hill Road. We started near the bicycle entrance and walked along down the Mount Rose Distillery before turning around.

The LHT is about connections—with people, and places. There are a few short connector trails to other communities and trail systems, with more being planned. A short trail leads from the LHT to Pennington. Princeton also has a trail network that currently leads close to the LHT. At the Brearley House, a short connector trail leads to the D & R Canal, a 70-mile pathway along the Delaware River and canal system through Hunterdon, Mercer, and Somerset counties. Additional connections to Hopewell Borough, Ewing, and Princeton are under consideration.

The trail is paved making it safe, family-friendly and available for walking and bicycling. Walking and talking is all we wanted today with access to open space for relaxation. We did not explore the connections to other area trails.

Just east of the LHT, at a high point in the topography at the intersection of Pennington-Rocky Hill Road and Carter Road, was the village of Mount Rose. The village sat on this elevated ridgeline of New Jersey’s central plateau and was known for growing fine roses, hence the name. Mount Rose was important in the rural farm economy and catered to the needs of local farmers with storekeepers, shoemakers, a blacksmith, and a wheelwright.

Bordering Hopewell and Princeton Townships, and known initially as Stout's Corner, Mount Rose developed as a village in the 1820s. By 1880 there was a school, post office, sawmill, and several shops. Still, it soon became known as a centre of peach brandy, apple cider and whiskey production with two distilleries operating into the early part of the 20th century. One of these distilleries was the Mount Rose Distillery. The office building of the former distillery still stands and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Regular readers will know that I am a fan of the Sourland Mountain Spirits, which was established in 2015 by local serial entrepreneur Ray Disch in 2015. Sourland Mountain Spirits, the first farm distillery in New Jersey since prohibition, are located on the same farm property as my town other favourite local watering holes, the Brick Farm Tavern and Troon Brewing. Shortly after Sourland Mountain Spirits made their announcement, the former mayor of Princeton Township, Chad Goerner, announced plans to open a second distillery in Hopewell, called Mount Rose Distillery in honour of the old distillery.

The Weekend

Bhavna and I both dislike cold weather, but on sunny days we can persuade ourselves to bundle to get outside. Normally at this time of the year, I would look forward to the weekend, waking up early to take a walk along the D&R Canal or a hike in the Sourland Mountain Preserve. January is ending and, with the exception of a short hike along Beden Brook, we have had little outdoor activity.

It was cold and damp again yesterday and I feel that yet another weekend has been “wasted” inside streaming content on Disney+ and Netflix or drinking ales from one of the local micro-breweries. My midsection grows softer and larger each day. 😊

It rained all day yesterday, so much that many local roads we flooded. I can only imagine that the hiking trails are soggy and slippery.

I am starting to feel the effects of the “winter blues”, from the cold, grey skies all day, and the limited exposure to sunlight. It’s frustrating that I can not do any of the suggested remedies.

Last weekend, after a super short and finger freezing photo session near Carnegie Lake with had exhausted my battery, I came home to prep my photo bag for a course I was taking the next day. I wanted to be sure that my batteries were charged and my equipment was ready. I discovered that my Fujifilm X-T2 would not turn on. I tried one battery after another, but the rear LCD and viewfinder remained blank. I connected the camera via USB to my iMac and the camera came on in USB mode. I took it to the Fujifilm service centre in Edison where I hope they can restore my camera. I am scheduled to attend a food photography workshop in March.

Our kids are both attending university so Bhavna and I have more time to spend with each other. In another week, we’ll drive to Oberlin, Ohio to return the youngest to college. I’ll miss her and her cat, Camilla, but with her return, we’ll have more freedom.

Despite my health challenges over the last few years, in 2018 we visited Seneca Lake in the finger lake region of New York staying at the Grist Mill Inn and Brewery. The previous year we did some road trips west into Pennsylvania stopping to tour the local breweries along the way.

The Hudson Valley Brewery in Beacon, New York has been on our tour to-do list for a few years. Hudson Valley produces some of my favourite sour IPAs.

The sun is out this morning so tie for a break. I’m heading outside for a walk around the neighbourhood. Gotta keeps my spirits up.

A Short Walk on the Stonebridge Trails

Yesterday I walked the Stonebrodge Trails with Bhavana. I've hiked or walked many of the trails in the area around Hopewell, Princeton, Hillsborough, and Montgomery including Van Horne Park Trail, Devil's Half Acre, Autumn Hill Reserve,Institute Woods Trails, D&R Canal Park Trail, Griggstown Native Grassland Preserve Trail, St. Michaels Farm Preserve, etc. Most of the trails in Montgomery Township were cleared and created by the Montgomery Friends of Open Space (MFOS) and D&R Greenway Land Trust.

Bhavna has had problems with a heel spur in her right foot. She's been in pain for several weeks, but she wanted to get out of the house. I wanted to capture trail images for Frank's weekly challenge. I remembered that Stonebridge Trails were mostly flat terrain that could be easy on her foot. She was hesitant but agreed to come with me. Neither one of us has walked the trail.

The trail wraps around the Stonebridge at Montgomery senior living community. We parked in the lot next to the Montgomery 1860's house. We did not find the trailhead, which we later discovered was near the entrance to the 1860's property but found a way onto the trail from behind the red barn.

We took a wrong turn at the fork in the trail, and I think, ended up going southeast toward the D& R Canal toward Rocky Hill. The trail was muddy. We turned around and returned to the fork to go the other direction.

Some of the trails are part of a paved loop walkway which I think was built for Stonebridge. It's early summer, and most of the spring wildflowers have since disappeared. However, I did find small islands of colour among the ocean of green.

Bhavna's pain threshold was breached 30 minutes into the walk, so we took the abbreviate trail and headed back to the car.
