Old Subway: Sunday, February 3, 2019, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

New Subway: Sunday, February 10, 2019, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Instructor: Alan Kesselhaut

"In New York City, underground art is a literal phenomenon." Huffington Post. We will explore the NYC Subway, finding astonishing museum-quality artworks in the Subway's labyrinth of corridors while we capture the energy and soul of the people who inhabit the underground street.

In the Old Subway, we'll shoot a Roy Lichtenstein mural, passageways lined with colorful glass mosaics and a profusion of work in unexpected materials, all without leaving the subway!

In the New Subway, We'll shoot Chuck Close's and Vik Muniz' extraordinary contemporary mosaics and the spectacular Oculus at the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The class meets at Penn Station. Your registration includes one subway entrance fare per class.

This one requires two weekends! I've done field trips in New York City with instructor Alan Kesselhaut and @princeton_photo. I was exhausted but I learned a lot and captured some great images for my catalogue.

Composition on Location: Central Park

Sunday, October 7, 2018, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Rain date October 14)

Instructor: Bill Blanchard

The allure of Central Park that attracts locals and international visitors to this urban oasis has much to do with its appealing juxtaposition of rustic landscapes with cityscapes and people watching. We'll start with a discussion of composition and camera settings for the conditions we find. Together, we will explore the "beauty, the charm, and whimsy" of the central section of this iconic parkland while we put into practice the rules of composition to create memorable images.

I've visited and photography Central Park and a few times with my family. But I think the experience is completely different one is walking around with instructor @billblanchard and a small group of photographers from @princeton_photo with the intent to capture something interesting.

The Real Advantage

( )

I often feel uncomfortable making decisions or providing guidance to my clients unless I’ve had time to think. When I’m rushed I feel stressed. Sometimes all I need is a few hours. Sometimes days. Other time weeks.

Thinking time is non-linear. The time you spend thinking – walking around a problem in a three-dimensional way and exploring all of the various perspectives and mental models – pays you back tenfold in the end. The problem for those who are shortsighted is that this time will appear as a negative for a while because it looks like nothing is getting done. This situation is a great example of what I call first-order negative, second-order positive.
