POSSE Integrations

Testing out some integrations for WordPress and Mastodon (Chris Aldrich | BoffoSocko)

There are a bunch of ways for using WordPress with Mastodon, so tonight I thought I’d start experimenting with some.
Straightforward syndication/POSSE plugins (requires an account on a Mastodon instance):
Mastodon Autopost
Mastodon Share
More advanced plugins (shouldn’t require an account a…

Some of the WordPress plug-ins for setting up OStatus — e.g. the host-meta-plugin and Salmon — are not supported under the latest production WordPress build. I avoid incompatible and unsupported WordPress plugins to mitigate potential security risks.

I will most likely try Bridgy Fed as part of my current work to add more POSSE integrations to this website.

  1. Khürt, I’m a little reticent to use some of the older code in the OStatus plugin (suite) as well, but almost all of it was written by Matthias Pfefferle whose code I trust. He self-dogfoods almost all of it himself in addition to much of the codebase for other IW WordPress plugins. I suspect all of it works as advertised and I’ve heard he’s continuing to work on many of these particular parts. The Salmon plugin may look “old” but I suspect it’s because it’s an older standard that really hasn’t changed and thus doesn’t need regular updates.
The tough part about all of these options though is that they are all somewhat fragmented and only cover bits and pieces of these bigger networks. They’ve still got some time to “bake”, but the movement on them and their current capabilities are pretty impressive.

I read those two sentences as IndieWeb and POSSE are “unstable beta”.

  2. I have no idea what will happen when you successfully complete this POSSE integration. However, I suspect that having POSSE on board is a great way to pow pow pow your website to another level. Keep us posted!!!

    1. I’m learning as I go. And POSSE in this context is:

POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, a content publishing model that starts with posting content on your own domain first, then syndicating out copies to 3rd party services with permashortlinks back to the original on your site.
