Pasta, Not Bacon, Makes You Fat. But How?

I could do without the “Carbs Are Killing You” title here, but this is a great infographic demonstrating the true culprit behind a great deal of fat accumulation: carbohydrate intake.

Our cells evolved to use the sugars from starch and carbohydrates far more efficiently than fats. And we also have an intricate signaling mechanism to convert excess carbs to fat quite easily. It’s part of our basic biology.

It’s not just any carbs (liquid carbs - soda - are worse than complex by far) and it doesn’t mean that eating a bunch of fat is safe (your heart can still be quite unhealthy even if you’ve got low body fat). But it does show us why to the idea that the extra-large Coke and fries is just as dietarily dangerous as the burger in your value meal.

I’m not advocating for low-carb diets, but people should know how their metabolism works!

October 17th, 2011 - Warm water

After I ate my lunch I realized I had nothing to drink so I took a walk over to the nearby Wegman's to grab some sparkling water. I've reduced the amount of soda I drink but I still can't drink plain water. Somehow the presence of "bubbles" makes water taste better. I don't like the taste of seltzer but I love San Peligrino, Perrier and other sparking mineral waters. Wegman's had a decent set of choices. Except for today. Well … in actuality they had the same set of choices that I see normally but all the bottles were warm. At first, I thought it was just the first few bottles. Perhaps the person who stocks the cooler had just replaced an empty shelf. However, it soon became clear, as I went from shelf to shelf that all the bottles of drink — water, soda, etc — were warm. Not tepid, mind you but warm. Like they had sat out in the sun for a while. I eventually found a bottle of "flavored" water across the floor in another area of the store but I was not happy. I snapped these on my iPhone 4 as I exited.

April 11, 2011 - Bubbles

I love soda. I think mostly because of the carbonation. I drink mostly Coke Zero or Diet A&W Root Beer. Never Pepsi. Blech!??But I think I drink too much of it. I tried drinking seltzer but I did not like the taste. I tried San Pellegrino sparkling spring water and loved it. But it's the same thing you say. No. It isn't. The bubbles in San Pellegrino are ... lighter. And the taste is much different. Maybe, it's the natural minerals in the spring water in but the San Pellegrino just taste delicious.

Today, I've decided to cut back on my soda and drink more sparkling water. Buying cases of San Pellegrino to keep up with my demand for bubbles can get expensive. I've decided to purchase a carbonation unit and make my own "bubbly water".
