The High Line and Hudson Yards Vessel

Attending The High Line and Hudson Yards Vessel

Saturday, April 4, 2020, 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm (Raindate April 5)

Instructor: Josh Weiss
The High Line, New York's only elevated park, is a brilliantly-conceived conversion of an historic out-of-use railroad trestle into a public landscape. Hudson Yards, New York’s newest neighborhood, is connected to the northerly section of the High Line. Its "extraordinary centerpiece", just opened this year, is The Vessel, a "soaring new landmark meant to be climbed". The High Line offers photographers some of the best views in New York, intriguing street photography and interesting composition opportunities. The Vessel, with its spiral staircase, provides us with "new perspectives of the city (and one another) from different heights, angles and vantage points."
We'll begin with a discussion of composition and camera settings. As evening approaches, we will enter the vessel for an hour of amazing low-light and night shooting.

NYC Street Photography: The ABCs of the East Village

Saturday, June 16, 2018, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (rain date June 23)

Instructor: Josh Weiss

The East Village has been a symbol of the counterculture in New York City since the 1950s. Once synonymous with beatniks and later with punk rock, the neighbourhood today is a unique mix of people and cultures, music and art.

During the day, we will explore Alphabet City and other notable East Village spots, learning to identify a good street photo. We'll work on striking the right balance of storytelling and technique, from camera settings to lighting and composition and discuss strategies for photographing candid scenes versus posed street portraits. Your instructor will be with you every step of the way to look at your work and answer questions.

I have always wanted to learn and practice street photography but I have honestly felt anxious at photographing strangers in public. I am hoping doing this in a group setting with an instructor @thecameraproj and @princeton_photo will help me overcome some of that anxiety.
