Not Yet Spring

The weather on Tuesday was sublime air temperatures in the mid-tens; about 15ºC. Much of the snow in the backyard had melted, but the grass and ground sill felt soggy underfoot.

The weather on Tuesday was sublime with air temperatures in the mid-tens; about 15ºC. Much of the snow in the backyard had melted, but the grass and ground sill felt soggy underfoot. Still, I wanted to satisfy my urge to be outdoors. I had been inside for far too long during the cold, grey and snow damp weeks of January and February. I am still looking for new contract opportunities, and without work to distract me, being at home was affecting my mental health. I was tired of the fluorescent glow from the iMac's display. I wanted to feel some natural light on my face. I decide to hike the Aunt Molly Trail on St. Michael's Preserve.

The first part of the trail was a mixture of ice, water, mud and snow slushy. But once I got up the steep incline near the brook, things changed as the hiking trail opened. The sun fell and soaked my face in cosmic rays of warmth.

The trail changed to a crunch layer of packed snow. I could see that many other hikers had trampled the snow and packed it onto the trail.

Despite the warmer weather and exposure to full sun, there were large patches of snow. In some places, there was still so much snow that I could not see the trail.

In other areas, the leaf biomass's warmth and the lichen had melted the snow to reveal green patches, not just from the Holly.

I could hear bird song even as the trail changed from ice and snow to mud and ice and ice and water.

Then the trail changed again, mostly mud and ice. The trail was less open and more claustrophobic, lined with leafless trees and shrubs. I could see pockets of green lichen on dead branches and the base of trees.

I was mildly concerned that I could no longer tell if I was still on the trail, that I might be wandering off. It was then clear again, and soon, I was back where I started and ready to head home.

Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve

Bhavna and I went for a walk in the Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.

Bhavna and I wanted some exercise. The Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve is not far from home, but it's not quite in my neighbourhood. It's in Princeton, the town next door. While the border to Princeton is walking distance to my home, and I enjoyed (before COVID) meeting with friends for lunch in the restaurants and photo-walking around downtown with my photo groups, my social community is centred around Montgomery Township, where I live.

The sky was overcast, and a cool wind gentle wind made a noise in the leaves overhead. We walked in silence (mostly), stopping once to sit on a wooden bench, to do nothing but sit. I shot all photographs with the in-camera Classic Chrome Film Simulation.

I think the idea behind this challenge was to find opportunities for photography that are closer to home. I guess a lot of other people have been travelling the world pre-COVID. I've been photographing close to home for a while.

Three surgeries between 2018 and 2019 reduced my ability and desire to travel. I wasn't able to travel to the West Indies for my father's funeral last year. Now the global pandemic means continue to photograph close to home. SomeI'vee I've photographed several timeshaven'tven't left the state since 10 March, and my woodland photography is limited to the corners of the counties that border mine; Mercer and Hunterdon. If I had $1I'd, I'd buy a macro lens for my Fuji X-T2 and explore small things.

So nothing to change for this week challenge. Just keep on keeping on.

I think this is the first I've I've left my home in weeks.

Inspiration

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

This afternoon Bhavna and I went for a walk on a section of the 7.89 kilometres (4.9-mile) paved loop trail around Thompson Park in Holmdel starting at the parking lot at Cross Farm Park. I wanted to try something different new and had scouted the area near Colts Neck where I pick up craft beer from Source Farmhouse Brewing. Part of the trail follows the rim of Marlu Lake. We walked about 6.26 km. When we started on the trail, I noticed that Cross Farm Park is mostly open meadow filled with New Jersey wildflowers; based on my limited knowledge, Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), Sugarcane Plumegrass (Saccharum giganteum), Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and others.

We walked and talked, and Bhavna noticed that I seemed a bit distracted. She asked, "what's going on". I told her I was not feeling motivated at work and life in general, that I was feeling anxious and disconnected. I was burnt out, and that on some days, I just wanted to sit and stare into the distance.

I talked some more about my anxiety over the end of my contract in December, the need to train to maintain my certifications and skills. Where once I was passionate and energised and engaged with work and life, I had a lot of mental clutter and spent most of my free time reading blogs or watching crappy sitcom TV.

Uncertainty about the future, challenges with physical health, continually existing in the same unchanging environment, and having to stay distant from my friends and colleagues are just some of the things affecting my ability to focus. I told her I was feeling isolated.

While we walked, I photographed whatever caught my eye. It wasn't until we were home that I realised that our talk might have inspired my photography that evening. I had subconsciously opened the aperture of my lens and used the narrow depth of field to isolate my subjects from an otherwise crowded scene. Is this how inspiration finds us? Is it a random thing that just happens?

Bhavna and I continued walking and talking. My belief in my abilities, my self-esteem, and my optimism are low. We talked about ways I could find to push past this low point, but we both struggled with things to do to change my mental state. I have very few options during this global pandemic.

At the end of the walk, I realised that even though I dislike online training, it’s my only option right now. No in-person courses are being taught. My main concern is how I will be affected by learning while sitting for hours at the same desk and computer where I sit for hours to work?

We drove home in silence. I ate dinner, then cleaned away and organised the mess on my desk, which had become a reflection of my mental disarray. Removing the physical clutter may clear the mental clutter, and I’ll find the inspiration to find a way forward.

Tomorrow, I’ll plan Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely training goals to accomplish before the end of the year.

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain. The Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear, Dune by Frank Herber
