Bird Fishing at Sandy Hook

I was excited as I eagerly awaited the chance to utilise my brand new XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR superzoom lens. I signed up for several bird-watching expeditions with the New Jersey Audubon Society to make the most of my new acquisition. The first outing was originally scheduled for a Saturday but was postponed until Sunday due to inclement weather. According to the forecast for Sunday, we could expect chilly winds but clear skies. As I arrived at the designated meeting spot in parking lot B, I immediately noticed that the wind was stronger and colder than anticipated. To combat the harsh elements, I was compelled to wear my Patagonia winter jacket over my Patagonia spring jacket to stay cosy and warm throughout the outing.

We began our birdwatching excursion after receiving an introduction from our leaders, Linda Mack, Carole Hughes, and Chris Daly. After that, we headed towards the dunes near "Lot B". After not finding any good bird sightings for about 20 minutes, we decided to move further north towards Area "F" and Sandy Hook Fishing Beach. Unfortunately, the sun was already high above the horizon, which is not the ideal time for bird photography. My past experiences with photographer Ray Hennessey taught me that the best time for bird photography is early morning or late evening when the sun is rising or setting. The bright sky can overwhelm the camera's sensor, creating silhouettes. However, birders don't think much about this issue as the human eye can adjust to the scene.

As I gazed out into the distance, I noticed a sizable group of birds hovering above a boat anchored far offshore. Unfortunately, it was difficult to capture a clear photo of any bird due to the distance. The sun's reflection on the water also made it challenging to photograph them as they appeared as dark silhouettes. Nonetheless, I took a couple of shots of birds flying overhead, and I believe one was an osprey.

We left Sandy Hook Fishing Beach and headed to "Lot L" where we walked along a scenic trail through the trees to reach Beach 1. Although we were able to spot a few more birds, I only managed to capture one usable photograph of them in the trees.

I don't understand why I bothered to go out with my camera on that freezing morning after the sun was up. I hoped to learn about bird migration patterns. Given that the information I found online from the New Jersey Audubon and other websites was too general, I had thought that the best way to get specific details was from local birders. However, I didn't get much help from them either. I learned that May might be the best time for beach bird photography, but overall, the trip was a waste of time. I ended up leaving early when the group stopped for lunch.

Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark

For this challenge, I decided to visit Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. I drove up to Ocean Avenue from Asbury Park, New Jersey. The road is lined with the beach homes of the wealthy. I imagine it was like driving down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California. I don't know. I've never been to Beverly Hills.

To enter New York Harbor, ships need a deep channel. Until the 1900s, that meant sailing next to the shore of Sandy Hook. This gave the small peninsula a big role in the safety and defence of New York Harbor for more than a century before Fort Hancock was built.National Parl Service

Fort Hancock is a former United States Army fort at Sandy Hook in Middletown Township, New Jersey. The coastal artillery base defended the Atlantic coast and the entrance to New York Harbor, with its first gun batteries operational in 1896. Between 1874 and 1919, the adjacent US Army Sandy Hook Proving Ground was operated in conjunction with Fort Hancock. It is now part of Fort Hancock Memorial Park. It was preceded by the Fort at Sandy Hook, built 1857–1867 and demolished beginning in 1885. Wikipedia

I arrived in the Fort Hancock, and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark and drove slowly along Kessler Road looking for an interesting subject. As I expected most of the crumbling buildings had been fenced in. The buildings are favourite subjects for photographers and curious visitors, who have in the past entered the premises and bee hurt. Many of the buildings are unsafe. I turned on Hudson Road and parked in the back of one of the Bachelor Officers' Quarters.

The fort was decommissioned on December 31, 1974. Since then, most of Fort Hancock has served the public as the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The remainder of the peninsula serves as U.S. Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook.

While the recreation area is well maintained, the former buildings and officers quarters are in disrepair. The weather has battered the buildings making them uninhabitable.

Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Sandy Hook, New Jersey

I drove down to Sandy Hook from Skillman with my family yesterday. Bhavana is helping me create a series on the lighthouses of New Jersey and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the nearest one to Skillman. The drive is just over 1 hour.

I guess I didn't do my research because the lighthouse isn't near the water and is on an old army base surround by dilapidated buildings and people visiting the beach. I had expected something more like Old Barney at Barnegat Light.

I had just a few minutes to capture some images before the building was surrounded by people. I tried different angles but either I had the parking lot with cars in the frame or I had beach goers walking by on the road.

Perhaps I'll go back and try isolating the lighthouse itself from the house. Or maybe a shot from inside the light house tower would be more interesting.

This is a three exposure HDR: +2/0/-2. The images were combined in Photomatix Pro and tweaked in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I wanted a darker blue in the sky so I used the gradient filter in the top quarter of the image.

I was rushing this morning so I did not have time to export the image from my iMac's catalogs. I synced it over to Lightroom mobile and exported the compressed JPEG.

Few structures have the universal appeal and fascination of lighthouses. They are superbly romantic constructions: beacons of hope on a wild night, symbols of human ingenuity and perseverance in the face of the unforgiving seas.Peter Cox
