The patent logjam is a symptom of a system that allows poor quality patents. When the issuance rate for applications is so high, of course more people are going to apply for patents. And more of these applications are going to be very stupid. Unless things start to change, I see a "We the people ..." moment coming in the future.

I don't think we should be too concerned. Yet. While there is no real alternative to YouTube, there are many excellent replacements for Google's other services.
