NYC Street Photography: The ABCs of the East Village

Saturday, June 16, 2018, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm (rain date June 23)

Instructor: Josh Weiss

The East Village has been a symbol of the counterculture in New York City since the 1950s. Once synonymous with beatniks and later with punk rock, the neighbourhood today is a unique mix of people and cultures, music and art.

During the day, we will explore Alphabet City and other notable East Village spots, learning to identify a good street photo. We’ll work on striking the right balance of storytelling and technique, from camera settings to lighting and composition and discuss strategies for photographing candid scenes versus posed street portraits. Your instructor will be with you every step of the way to look at your work and answer questions.

I have always wanted to learn and practice street photography but I have honestly felt anxious at photographing strangers in public. I am hoping doing this in a group setting with an instructor will help me overcome some of that anxiety.

I spent the evening in Manhattan walking along the High Line taking photos. I was supposed to meet up with some other photographers but I missed my train and ended up taking another train one hour later. I took the New York subway from Penn Station to 14 Street and entered the High Line at Grovnesvoort Street.

The High Line is incredible. I don’t know how to describe it. Except for the tall buildings all around and the noise from the street I would have forgotten I was in a large city.

There were tourists everywhere. I picked up dinner — a BLT sandwich — for later and walked along the line toward 30th Street. I didn’t bump into any of the other photographers. One of them, Gevon Servo was called into work and left early so I sat and ate dinner and did some people watching. I stopped and listened to an old Chinese man playing the mandolin. Sweet music.

It got cold as I approached the end of the line. I then quickly walked the few blocks back to Penn Station. I think I took as many photos with my iPhone as I did my Nikon.
