Cherry Brook Preserve is an area of several hundred acres, made up of various parcels acquired by Montgomery Township over the years. Parts of it are heavily wooded, while other parts had been farmed for many years and reforested by the Montgomery Township Open Space Committee. Cherry Brook and two tributaries run through the preserve, and there are significant wetlands. The small scenic pond is centrally located and reachable from several directions.
There are four major access points. We parked on the trailhead on Cherry Hill Road, just south of the Waldorf School.
This was our first hike of the New Year. The trails amble along open farmland, curve through verdant meadows, tunnel through cedar groves before converging at a pretty pond. But the enchanting centrepiece for me is the pine tree corridor.
The ground was sogging wet from the rains that had fallen two days earlier. Bhavna complained a lot because I had initially promised her a primarily dry walk along the D&R Canal Trail in Lawrenceville, which I hiked just before Christmas. I admit that this hike was not much fun. The air was cold and damp, and the trail was muddy and impassible in many spots. We did the best we could.
