Is the Mac mini enough?

The best external monitors for your Thunderbolt 3 MacBook Pro by Roger Fingas

If a MacBook Pro is your primary computer, you're probably going to want a big-screen monitor for your desktop. These are some of the top-rated options compatible with Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C, in no particular order.

Assuming Apple keeps updating the Mac mini, I considered whether, in a few years, I could replace my 2013 27“ iMac with a Mac mini and a 27” Thunderbolt display. The new Mac mini may be all the machine I need for fun photo editing with Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

The nagging questions are:

  • How well does the Intel Core i5 3.0GHz 6-core 8th-generation processor in the mini perform in comparison to the 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 in the iMac?
  • Where can I find comparisons of the two CPUs?
  • What is the life a computer display? What is the rate of obsolescence?
  • Is the initial (and replacement) cost of a Mac mini + 27" Thunderbolt 3 display more than the cost of a new 27" iMac?

Thoughts?
