We’ve discovered there’s lots to love about Safari 13, but we’ve also learned that it will no longer work for customers using 1Password 6.
I am disappointed by this news. My family and I have used 1Password for several years. I’ve always paid to upgrade. The upgrade price, a separate purchase for iOS and macOS, was more than the typical app but for the utility that 1Password provided for my family, the pricing seemed fair.
But I don’t see much value in a 1Password subscription. The subscription price is significantly higher than the previous upgrade cost, doesn’t provide additional features that I want, and I am not convinced that I would see significant improvement in the software over the subscription time frame, one year.
However, now I won’t be able to use the software at all in my favourite browser. I have very few good choices. I could switch to another password manager, but the switching cost, time spent migrating all my account information, is high.
I could switch to another browser and keep using 1Password 6, but Google Chrome is anathema to me, and Firefox lacks integration with the operating system.
AgileBits is offering a discount for current 1Password 6 users. I will reluctantly upgrade to 1Password 7 for families and hope they have a better track record of updates and upgrades as Adobe does with their Creative Cloud.
I have used LastPass for years, the web app was free but the mobile app is a paid app. Its worth the $12 a year to have the subscription since I use it all the time via web and in certain cases via phone. The mobile app uses the biometrics on the phone so that make it easy for me to get access to my passwords.
A friend of mine still uses 1Pass so I need to ask him what he thinks. He is also a MAC person
I know of LastPass. They have had several security incidents. Because LastPass is web-based, the passwords vault is exposed to hackers on the Internet. The 1Password vault is stored encrypted on your device and therefore not exposed to the Internet and therefore is at reduced risk of being hacked.
1Password entered the field early (before LastPass and all the others) and has remained out front in terms of features, but the app pricing has always been more expensive than LastPass. 1Password has had no security incidents. Like most people in cyber-security, 1Password is my default recommendation.
I typically don't buy any software that the whole family can't use on their devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac). When you buy an app in the App Store or Mac App Store, it usually has a five-user license. That's perfect for our family of four. Upgrade pricing used to be about $50 total split between the iOS and macOS versions. The subscription cost for a family is $65/year. I just hope they use the money to fund frequent updates.
